Yes, it’s possible to run your business without your business running you

Dear Small Business Owner,

Starting, running, and growing businesses is neither easy or simple.

It takes a lot of tenacity, drive and commitment.

And sometimes when our business is going through growing pains ( more sales, more revenue, more customers, hiring employees, expanding locations…..oh my!) we tend to get so caught up in the day to day of running our business, that we forget to work on our business.

And sometimes we are so caught up in business overwhelm and overload (how many fires did you put out today?).. that we forget the reason we started our business in the first place.

And in doing so we tend to forget about the humans behind the business (including ourselves!) in the process.

I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be this way.

It does not have to be as hard as you might think and resilience does not have to be your badge of honor.

Consider this your permission slip to pause, and take a deep breath…

Hi, I’m Michelle Gay (she/her)

I’m a Small Business Culture Strategist and Consultant. I specialize in Workplace Culture Consulting with a side of HR, and Leadership Coaching for Emerging and Established Small Business Owners.

For the past decade, I’ve been partnering with, guiding and supporting business owners to create resilient and agile businesses, build upon the foundation of thriving and inclusive workplace cultures, equitable and sustainable business practices and human-centered service leadership.

I specialize in Workplace Culture Consulting and Leadership Coaching for Emerging and Established Small Business Owners

What lights me up…

Coming alongside business owners to support them and guide them in creating intentional workplace cultures that embrace human-centered service leadership.

This is because an intentional, well thought out, active and transparent culture is the North Star of your business.

It is the thing that keeps everything on track when it is effectively integrated into the business.

It provides a way to ensure that everyone is moving together towards the vision of the business and helps you as the business owner see the cracks before they become ominous canyons.

At some point, your business will be like a toddler…

I like to define the Toddler Phase as the season of your business with the most growth pains

At the Toddler Phase, your business will do its absolute best to convince you that it doesn’t need help, and it can do everything by itself.

And yet you know in your gut that’s not right, and actually, it’s becoming a bit more than you feel prepared to handle.

Here’s how The Toddler Phase of your business might look, sound and feel.

My clients often hire me to help them with their business when…

  • They feel like they are losing themselves

  • They feel like their company is running them

  • Their identity has become enmeshed with the company

  • They are unsure how to lead versus manage their company

  • They are in constant state of fear that they might lose someone and the business would implode

  • There is no room to breathe

  • They feel isolated and alone

  • They feel overwhelmed with having to handle all the things, all the time

  • They feel like their employees are doing whatever they want versus what the company needs

  • They feel like the business has become too big and more than they can manage on their own.

Here’s The Problem:

Lack of Cohesive Structure

  • This can look like lack policies, procedures, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and systems in place for guidance and directions.

  • Lack of consistency in following established policies, procedures and guidelines

  • Too many moving parts

  • This can also look like being a walking idea fest. As a fellow visionary, I see you and hear you. The problem is understanding the difference between which ideas actually support your vision and your business, and which ideas need to go to the parking lot.

Lack of Intentional Culture

  • This can look like a toxic or psychologically unsafe workplace, due to lack of a consciously created culture

  • Missing Cultural Artifacts in the business such as Values and Service Vision, Manager’s Manuals, Communication Agreements, and more

  • Lack of active engagement and evaluation of Business Cultural Artifacts,

  • Feeling challenged by employees

  • Lack of respectful, equitable and clear communication

Lack of Bigger Purpose

  • This can look like working 16+ hours per day to run the business

  • Forgetting the why behind your business and your life

  • Business owners feel like they have sold their soul to their business, and resenting the business

  • Doing everything by the book, and doing all the Shoulds and forgetting to incorporate the Wants

  • Following someone els’e business model without considering how it fits the company culture

  • The story that’s being told: “If I don’t do it this way, the way that I’m supposed to, then I will fail”

Lack of Trust for Self and Others

  • This can look like the inability to trust employees to run the business in your absence

  • Micromanaging employees

  • The inability to trust yourself to step away from the business and delegate .

  • There’s only one way, and it’s your way

  • Lack of empowering and positive leadership model where rest is a practice and hustle culture is a four letter word

  • The story that’s being told: “This business is my baby, I have to work on it all the time, otherwise it will die”

None of my clients wanted a business where they are working all the time, and yet they do. I help my clients to create structure within their business that gives them freedom, so that if they want, they can go backpacking for two months and not have their business die.”

  • Construct and systems that work for their business versus a one-size fits all program

  • Strategies to use for decision making

  • Building Plug & Play systems to move people around to be flexible

  • Higher Employee Retention

The truth is, the value of a positive company culture is often undervalued, if not completely overlooked until there’s a problem, or even worse, a crisis. This was the case with our company, but had I known then what I do now, I would have worked with Michelle years before we did. Many of the issues that companies encounter are preventable if the importance of a company’s culture is first recognized, and then molded to be both a more positive and consequently more productive workplace for everyone.
